ONE OF OUR OWN

Adopt a Road Project


As of 2008, 78 volunteer groups
have adopted 167.85 km of roads and picked up 470 bags of litter.
The Canadian Federation of University Women Kelowna has been at this job for
over eight years, making their contribution to the community. The
Federation cleans Weddell Place and Poplar Point twice a year.
CFUW Kelowna Hosted CFUW BC Council AGM in
1990 and 2005.

Education

An early project was to hold
career night for High School girls at Kelowna Secondary School.

For over 25
years a series of public lectures held at Capsule College to raise money for scholarships and to entertain and inform the general public.

Individual members judged
school debates, served on PAC boards and on School Boards.
|
 |
Established two endowment
funds (one at COBSS and one at Okanagan College)
to generate funds to support local students in the form of scholarships and
bursaries.

Started Kelowna and

The club's spirit of
generosity enabled us to take no fewer than ten lovely gift baskets of
toiletries and special foods to the Kelowna Women's Shelter just before
Christmas and to donate $316.00 each to the Westside Health Network and
the Lake Country Food Bank. These are the largest donations CFUW Kelowna has raised for its Christmas recipients.

Federation Activities.
We are part of the
national federation's lobbying efforts on government issues. We
receive NO government or corporate funding,
and our input is thus felt to be unbiased. As a federation we were
one of the original Non-Governmental
Organisations (NGO) to have consultative status at the United Nations
and still hold this
distinction.
Individual members serve or
have served on BC Council and on National or International Boards and take
part in Conferences at the
provincial, national and international levels.

CONGRATULATIONS
The "CFUW Crafty Ladies" were officially thanked at a
luncheon on 26 June, with the "Meals on Wheels" volunteers. The invitation
was based on
the fact that they made and donated 130 Christmas crackers and Easter
baskets which were included with the delivered meals.

The hall was booked, the coffee was brewed and the
people came and filled the hall. The moderator kept the
questions coming and the time keeper made sure all questions were
answered in a timely manner.

Environment, advocacy and action.

CFUW Kelowna presented a Workshop Tread Lightly on
the Earth: The Canary in the Coalmine at the CFUW National AGM held in
Vancouver. 12-15 July 2007.

Provided
dinghy and two paddles for the S. Okanagan Health Unit for taking
water samples, 1970s. |

Presentations and workshops for the public, promoting the 3 Rs "Reduce,
Reuse, Recycle".

Workshop on Energy, 1980s. Public presentation with the
City of Kelowna and
Environment Canada on climate change, 1990s.

Successfully presented two resolutions to
CFUW National AGMs, which are now CFUW Policy:

1. Adding ethanol to
gasoline to reduce
pollution (1992).
2. Labelling of
genetically modified
foods (1998).

Since 2000 The Club has been responsible for cleanup of two roads as part of
the "Adopt a Road" programme.

Club Members are continuing to find ways to reduce their 'carbon
footprint'.

Social
Issues
 |
Compiled and circulated the
first three Community Service Directories (with
sponsors).
|
 |
Advice Services Kelowna (ASK)
initially run by club volunteers, then paid personnel; evolved into Community Resources run by the government.
|
 |
Major contributor to
furnishing the first Women's Shelter. Ongoing support for present
Women's Shelter.
|
 |
Acted as volunteer tutors for
Project Literacy.
|
 |
1994 (with Government of
Canada grant) published Affordable Housing in Kelowna - a background and resource document on what was available.
|
 |
1996 (again with government
grant) hired and supervised a staff person to prepare a document regarding Secondary Suites -
a how to guide, which was used by the City Planning Department as a resource document in policy formation on
secondary suites.

Instrumental in the building
of the new Library
|
 |
Founded "Friends of the Library" and organized the first three book sales.

CFUW
Kelowna hosted the BC Council AGM from 29 April - 1 May 2005.
It was a wonderful weekend of fellowship, learning, fun, good food,
tours of Kelowna and awareness of our provincial and national links.
